Diversity in STEM - week

Period: 5-9 November 2018

The workshop covers:

1. How to make bio plastic.

2. Experiment and learn the properties of this material and how to write the ecuations in ChemSketch.

3. Applications of bioplastic in the real world.

4. The participants will walk away with their kit which will consist of a mould to make it in and bio plastic.

5. Creating a business plan and a blog to promote the product.

6. Meeting with industry representatives and discussions on environmental protection by creating new alternatives to plastic pollution,
7. Meeting with decision-makers in the field of environmental protection.
8. Evaluation of projects and business plans, promotion blog by specialist in the field of media and ICT.

The aim of the workshop is to discuss what the bioplastics are made of and how they can save our Planet in the context of the “European strategy for plastics in a circular economy” that has been adopted on 16th January 2018. The workshop will bring together students, teachers, scientists, policy makers and experts to discuss the alternative plastics production sources, bio-based plastics and the establishment of a regulatory methods to protect our planet and to decide the importance of plastics with biodegradable properties.

We divided the workshop days into several categories.  We invited students split in mixed groups (girls, boys, secondary school, high school, students studying mathematics, natural sciences or social sciences, literature) from different schools) to produce different packaging from bioplastics, MAKE FINAL PRODUCTS, and created with the CkemSchetch program the chemical reactions that took place during the experiment, BUILD A BUSINESS PLAN and CREATE A BLOG, to promote the product. Business specialists have evaluated their products, business plans and asked students to be their own entrepreneurs, but in a field to help their lives to survive. All these experiments we did at the same time with pupils from other countries with whom we are partners: Italy, Germany, Greece, UK.
